How do you and your family actually move through your home?</font></span><br /><br /><span><font color="#515151">Where do things naturally land when you walk in the door? Where do papers and mail tend to pile up? Where do backpacks, shoes, and daily essentials end up, even when there&rsquo;s already a designated spot somewhere else?<br />&#8203;</font></span><br /><span><font color="#515151">These patterns aren&rsquo;t mistakes. When you evaluate how your space is being used, you gain clarity on what kind of systems will actually stick.</font></span></div> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.serenespacespo.com/uploads/6/0/4/1/60416689/published/cream-minimalist-living-room-instagram-post.png?1770950215" alt="Picture" style="width:428;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> <div class="wsite-spacer" style="height:31px;"></div> <div class="paragraph"><span><span style="font-weight:700"></span></span><span style="color:rgb(114, 112, 112)"><span style="font-weight:700"><font color="#515151">Work With Landing Spaces, Not Against Them<br />&#8203;</font></span></span><span style="color:rgb(114, 112, 112)"><font color="#515151">Every home has landing spaces. Kitchen counters, entry tables, dining room chairs, corners of rooms. Instead of constantly clearing these areas and feeling frustrated when clutter returns, acknowledge them.<br /></font></span><br /><span style="color:rgb(114, 112, 112)"><font color="#515151">If papers always end up in the same spot, start there. Place a simple basket or tray exactly where clutter naturally collects. This isn&rsquo;t about letting clutter take over. It&rsquo;s about giving it a home.<br /></font></span><br /><span style="color:rgb(114, 112, 112)"><font color="#515151">The key is routine. Once the basket is full, or on a set day each week, everything inside gets handled. Filed, recycled, acted on, or let go. Contained clutter is manageable clutter.<br /><br /></font></span><span><span style="font-weight:700"><font color="#515151">Design Systems Around Real Family Habits</font></span></span><br /><span><font color="#515151">The same approach applies to kids&rsquo; spaces. If backpacks consistently land in the same place, that location is already doing the work for you. Rather than trying to change the habit, support it.<br /></font></span><br /><span><font color="#515151">Add command hooks right where backpacks naturally land. Add shoe storage where shoes already pile up. When systems align with existing habits, follow-through becomes easier and reminders become unnecessary.</font></span><br /><br /><span><span style="font-weight:700"><font color="#515151">Give Everyone a Clear Role</font></span></span><br /><span><font color="#515151">A home functions more smoothly when everyone participates. Instead of broad expectations like &ldquo;help out more,&rdquo; assign specific, simple goals.<br /></font></span><br /><span><font color="#515151">One person may be responsible for backpacks. Another for shoes. Another for checking shared spaces. Even young children can take ownership when the task is clear and manageable.<br /></font></span><br /><span><font color="#515151">Something as simple as assigning &ldquo;shoe patrol,&rdquo; rounding up stray shoes and putting them back where they belong, creates shared responsibility without overwhelm. Just ten minutes.<br /></font></span><br /><span style="color:rgb(114, 112, 112)"><font color="#515151">Everyone works at the same time, focusing only on their specific area. Set a timer and stop when it ends. This small, consistent rhythm prevents clutter from building up and keeps systems functional without draining energy.</font></span><br /><span style="color:rgb(114, 112, 112)"><font color="#515151">House management isn&rsquo;t about intensity. A packed schedule can look productive on the outside while quietly draining your energy and focus.<br /></span><br /><span>Intentional living starts when you pause and ask:</span></font><ul><li><span><span><font color="#3f3f3f">Does this still support the life I want?</font></span></span></li><li><span><span><font color="#3f3f3f">Does this reflect who I am now, not who I was?&nbsp;</font></span></span></li><li><span><span><font color="#3f3f3f">Is this right for the stage of life I am currently in?</font></span></span></li><li><span><span><font color="#3f3f3f">Is this helping me move forward, or keeping me stuck?</font></span></span></li></ul> <span><font color="#3f3f3f">Those questions apply just as much to your belongings as they do to your commitments.</font></span><br /><br /></div> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.serenespacespo.com/uploads/6/0/4/1/60416689/published/peace-2.png?1767816882" alt="Picture" style="width:603;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> <div class="paragraph"><font color="#3f3f3f"><strong><span><br />Removing Physical Clutter Clears Mental Noise -&nbsp;</span></strong><span>There&rsquo;s a reason clutter feels heavy. Every item you own asks something of you, either maintenance, storage, decision-making, or attention. When your environment is crowded, your brain is constantly processing, even if you&rsquo;re not aware of it.<br /></span><br /><span>Letting go of physical clutter creates immediate relief. Fewer decisions. Less visual noise. More room to breathe.</span><br /><span>This doesn&rsquo;t mean getting rid of everything or striving for minimalism if that doesn&rsquo;t fit your life. It means being honest about what&rsquo;s actually serving you.<br /></span><br /><span>That stack of papers you &ldquo;might need someday.&rdquo; The clothes that don&rsquo;t fit your body or your lifestyle anymore. The d&eacute;cor that no longer feels like you. These things quietly anchor you to the past. When you release them, you&rsquo;re not losing something, you&rsquo;re making space for ease.<br /></span><br /><strong><span>Your Schedule Deserves the Same Attention as Your Closets</span></strong><br />Clutter isn&rsquo;t just what&rsquo;s in your drawers. It&rsquo;s also what&rsquo;s on your calendar.<span>Many of us say yes out of habit, guilt, or obligation. We carry commitments that once made sense but no longer align with our priorities. We fill every open space, then wonder why we feel exhausted or disconnected. An intentional year requires editing your schedule with the same care you&rsquo;d use when organizing a room.<br /></span><br /><span>Ask yourself:</span></font><ul><li><span><span><font color="#3f3f3f">Which commitments energize me?</font></span></span></li><li><span><span><font color="#3f3f3f">Which ones feel heavy or draining?</font></span></span></li><li><span><span><font color="#3f3f3f">What am I holding onto out of guilt rather than choice?</font></span></span></li><li><span><font color="#3f3f3f"><span>Which commitments are </span><span>actually</span><span> non-negotiable?</span></font></span></li><li><span><font color="#3f3f3f"><span></span></font></span><br /></li></ul> <font color="#3f3f3f"><span>Removing unnecessary commitments creates margin. And margin is where creativity, rest, and presence live.<br /></span><br /><strong><span>Not Adding Is the Hardest (and Most Powerful) Part -&nbsp;</span></strong><span>We&rsquo;re conditioned to believe growth comes from accumulation. More knowledge. More tools. More effort.</span><br /><span>But often, the real shift happens when we stop adding and start subtracting.<br /></span><br /><span>You don&rsquo;t need another organizing system if your home is filled with items that don&rsquo;t belong in your life anymore. You don&rsquo;t need a more detailed planner if your schedule is overcommitted at its core.</span><br /><span>Before you bring something new in, whether it&rsquo;s a purchase, a project, or a responsibility, pause. Ask what might need to go first. Intentionality thrives in restraint.<br /></span><br /><strong><span>Space Creates Direction -&nbsp;</span></strong><span>When you remove what doesn&rsquo;t serve you, what remains becomes clearer.</span><br /><span>Your favorite items stand out. Your priorities sharpen. Your time feels more purposeful. Small, thoughtful edits compound over time.<br /></span><br /><span>One drawer. One room. One recurring commitment. It's not just about sorting things into "keep" and "toss" piles; it's about navigating memories, future hopes, and sometimes, a little bit of guilt. We&rsquo;re here to remind you: <span style="font-weight:700">you deserve a calm, supportive space, and you can achieve it without self-criticism.</span></span><br /><span>This process is an act of self-care, not punishment. Here are some tips to help you&nbsp;declutter&nbsp;without the guilt.<br /><br /><strong>1. Reframe the Story: <em>It&rsquo;s Not Failure, It&rsquo;s Evolution</em></strong></span><br /><span>The guilt often comes from feeling like you "should" have used an item, that you spent money on the item so you don&rsquo;t want to just donate it, the item is barely used and worth money, or that getting rid of it is a failure of your good intentions. Let&rsquo;s shift that narrative:</span></font><ul><li><span><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">The Gift You Gave Yourself:</span><span> You bought that hobby kit, that beautiful dress, or that book because, at the time, it brought you joy or was a step toward a goal. It served its purpose by being </span><span>a source of hope</span><span>. Now, you are honoring the person you are </span><span>today</span><span> by creating space for </span><span>current</span><span> joys.</span></font></span></li><li><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">A New Beginning for the Item:</span> When you donate or sell an item (be mindful that this can be time consuming and sit in your home for a while with good intentions to sell), you&rsquo;re not wasting it&mdash;you're extending its life and offering a resource to someone who needs it right now. Think of it as a helpful hand-off, not a disposal.</font></li></ul></div> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.serenespacespo.com/uploads/6/0/4/1/60416689/published/pxl-20250814-151703120.jpg?1766892746" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> <div class="wsite-spacer" style="height:29px;"></div> <div class="paragraph"><font color="#515151"><span><span style="font-weight:700">2. Embrace Grace &amp; Category-Based Decluttering</span></span><br /><span>Instead of tackling an overwhelming room, we recommend focusing on a <span style="font-weight:700">category</span> first. This gives you boundaries and reduces decision fatigue.</span></font><ul><li><span><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">Embrace grace for yourself:</span><span> When you pick up an item within that category (e.g., all pens, all sweaters, all spatulas), stop and ask yourself two simple, kind questions:</span></font></span><ol><li><span><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">Does this item support the life I am living </span><span style="font-weight:700">today</span><span style="font-weight:700">?</span><span> (Be honest about your current habits, not your aspirational self.)</span></font></span></li><li><span><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">What does the kindest version of myself want to do with this item?</span><span> (The kindest version of you would not want an item to cause you stress or clutter.)</span></font></span></li></ol></li><li><span><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">Containment is Key:</span><span> Before you start, bring your designated "Keep," "Leave (donate, sell, etc)," &ldquo;Another room,&rdquo; and "Decision Pending" boxes/bags into the space. The </span><span>Decision Pending</span><span> box is a temporary, guilt-free holding zone for the items you truly can't decide on at the moment. Give yourself a 3 month window to revisit this box, knowing you made the graceful choice to pause the decision, not avoid it entirely.</span></font></span></li></ul> <font color="#515151"><strong><span>3. Separate Memory from Object&nbsp;</span></strong><br /><span>For sentimental items, the guilt is often tied to the fear of losing the memory. Acknowledge this feeling, but gently separate the two:</span></font><ul><li><span><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">The Memory is Safe:</span><span> The joy of that vacation, the love from the person who gave you that gift, and the achievement of that project are </span><span>in your heart</span><span>, not solely in the item.</span></font></span></li></ul><ul><li><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">Create a Memory Box (With Boundaries):</span> Designate one small, special container for your most treasured keepsakes. The rule is simple: <span style="font-weight:700">it must be able to close easily.</span> Only the things that truly spark joy and tell your personal story get to stay. Everything else is a cherished reminder that can be photographed and then gracefully released.</font></li></ul></div> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.serenespacespo.com/uploads/6/0/4/1/60416689/published/20230303-13013785.jpg?1766892888" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> <div class="wsite-spacer" style="height:35px;"></div> <div class="paragraph"><font color="#515151"><strong><span>4. Practice Imperfect Progress-Self Care for small bursts</span></strong><br /><span>You don't need a dramatic, all-day overhaul. In fact, that kind of pressure often fuels the guilt. Oftentimes it&rsquo;s also very difficult to complete an entire room or space on your own without disruptions and before fatigue sets in.&nbsp; Let&rsquo;s call this time blocking for Self-Compassion</span></font><ul><li><span><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">Start Small and Finish Strong:</span><span> Focus on one drawer, one shelf, or a 15-minute time block. The goal is completion of that tiny task, not perfection of the whole room. Each small victory reinforces that you are capable and moving forward.</span></font></span></li><li><span><font color="#515151"><span style="font-weight:700">Take a Break When Emotions Rise:</span><span> If you feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or guilty, stop. Put the items down, step away, and do something kind for yourself. The clutter will be there when you are ready to approach it again with a refreshed, compassionate perspective.</span></font></span></li></ul> <span><font color="#515151">Decluttering is a journey of honoring your past while creating a peaceful, supportive environment for your present self. As a professional organizer, I understand that "clutter" isn't always a dirty word. Often, it's a reflection of a life well-lived, a testament to passions, and a comfortable part of your home's unique personality. So, when guests are on their way, the thought of tidying can feel overwhelming, especially when your home's "clutter" feels less like a problem and more like a cherished part of your space.</font></span><br /><span><font color="#515151"><br />But here&rsquo;s the wonderful news: you can absolutely prepare your home for guests in a way that feels authentic to you, minimizes stress, and still makes everyone feel incredibly welcome. It's not about achieving a sterile, showroom-perfect look (unless that's genuinely what you desire!). Instead, it's about creating a comfortable, functional, and inviting environment that celebrates your home's unique charm.<br /></font></span><br /><span><font color="#515151">Let's shift our perspective from "eradicating clutter" to "curating comfort." Because welcoming guests over the holidays is about spending time with loved ones and creating precious memories! <br /><br />&#8203;Here are some practical tips to help you prepare your home for guests, honoring your space and your style:</font></span></div> <div><div class="wsite-multicol"><div class="wsite-multicol-table-wrap" style="margin:0 -15px;"> <table class="wsite-multicol-table"> <tbody class="wsite-multicol-tbody"> <tr class="wsite-multicol-tr"> <td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:50%; padding:0 15px;"> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0px;margin-right:0px;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.serenespacespo.com/uploads/6/0/4/1/60416689/20240416-132826_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> </td> <td class="wsite-multicol-col" style="width:50%; padding:0 15px;"> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.serenespacespo.com/uploads/6/0/4/1/60416689/20240416-091943_orig.jpg" alt="Picture" style="width:auto;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div></div></div> <div class="paragraph"><font color="#626262"><span><span style="font-weight: 700;">1.</span> <span style="font-weight: 700;">Identify "Guest Zones" and Prioritize</span></span><br /><span>You don't need to tackle every corner of your home. Focus your energy on the areas your guests will primarily use:</span></font><ul><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">The Guest Bedroom/Sleeping Area:</span><span> This is paramount. A fresh, clean space with clear surfaces is key.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">The Bathroom: </span><span>Absolutely essential for hygiene and comfort. Make sure that they will have extra toilet paper or any essentials they may need.&nbsp;</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Living/Common Areas:</span><span> Where you'll gather and socialize.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">The Kitchen (Optional, but helpful):</span><span> If you plan on preparing meals together or guests will be accessing snacks/drinks.</span></font></span></li></ul> <font color="#626262"><span>Concentrate your efforts where it truly matters for their comfort and your peace of mind.</span><br /><br /><span><span style="font-weight: 700;">2. </span><span style="font-weight: 700;">The "Temporary Home" for Your Treasures</span></span><br /><span>For those items that truly define your home but might make a guest feel like they're navigating an obstacle course, consider a temporary relocation. This isn't about getting rid of them; it's about creating clear pathways and surfaces.</span></font><ul><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Bins, Baskets, and Boxes are Your Best Friends:</span><span> Grab some attractive (or at least sturdy!) containers. You can quickly gather up those overflowing magazines, craft projects, or collections and tuck them away in a closet, in the garage, under a bed, or in a less-used room.</span><span style="font-weight:700"> </span><span style="font-weight:700">The key here is that you don&rsquo;t just throw everything in boxes but that you are intentional with keeping &ldquo;like&rdquo; items together.&nbsp; Label the boxes/containers based on what category is inside and make sure you don&rsquo;t have a bunch of boxes and bins that are a hodge podge of everything, otherwise this can become a large unruly obstacle to staying clutter free later down the road.&nbsp;</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">The "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" Principle:</span><span> If you have an unused corner, a rarely opened cabinet, or even your car trunk for a day or two, these can serve as excellent temporary storage spots.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Remember, It's Temporary:</span><span> Once your guests depart, you can bring your beloved items back out. This strategy provides immediate relief without requiring permanent decisions.</span></font></span></li></ul><span><font color="#626262"><span></span></font></span><br /> <font color="#626262"><span><span style="font-weight: 700;">3. Clear Surfaces for Guest Comfort</span></span><br /><span>Even with clutter, clear surfaces in key guest areas make a huge difference. Imagine your guest trying to set down their phone, a book, or a cup of coffee.</span></font><ul><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Nightstands:</span><span> Essential in the guest sleeping area. A clear surface, a reading lamp, and maybe a small bottle of water are perfect. Consider where they will plug in their phones or laptops and arrange for them to have outlets or a power strip accessible.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Bathroom Counter:</span><span> Ensure there's space for their toiletries. You might even consider having a small tray available for them to use.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Coffee Tables and End Tables:</span><span> In living areas, clear enough space for drinks, snacks, and personal items.</span></font></span></li></ul> <font color="#626262"><span>This doesn't mean emptying every surface, but rather creating thoughtful pockets of clear space for their practical needs.</span><br /><br /><span><span style="font-weight: 700;">4. Freshness and Functionality: The Non-Negotiables</span></span><br /><span>These elements transcend any personal decorating style or level of "clutter." They are about basic hospitality and comfort:</span></font><ul><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Clean Linens and Towels:</span><span> Nothing says "welcome" like fresh sheets and fluffy towels. Have an extra set readily available.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">A Sparkling Bathroom:</span><span> Focus on the toilet, sink, and shower/tub. Stock it with toilet paper, soap, and things that you like to have when staying away from home.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Clear Pathways:</span><span> Ensure there are no tripping hazards, especially in areas guests will walk through frequently. This is about safety and ease of movement.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Empty Wastebaskets:</span><span> In the guest bedroom and bathroom, an empty wastebasket is a small but appreciated detail.</span></font></span><span><font color="#626262"><span></span></font></span></li></ul><br /> <font color="#626262"><span><span style="font-weight: 700;">5. Embrace the Authenticity of Your Home</span></span><br /><span>Ultimately, your home tells your story. Your guests are coming to see you and experience your space. While thoughtful preparation is wonderful, don't feel pressured to erase your personality.</span></font><ul><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Share Your Story:</span><span> If you have a collection you adore, don't hide it completely! Be ready to share the stories behind your treasures. This can be a wonderful conversation starter.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Acknowledge with Humor and Warmth:</span><span> If a certain area is perpetually "in progress," a lighthearted comment like, "Welcome to our creative chaos!" can disarm any potential awkwardness and make everyone feel more at ease.</span></font></span></li><li style=""><span><font color="#626262"><span style="font-weight:700">Focus on the Vibe:</span><span> A welcoming atmosphere comes from warmth, generosity, and genuine hospitality, not from the absence of every single object. Your smile, your conversation, and your genuine care will always be the most important elements.</span></font></span>&#8203;</li></ul></div> <div><div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none " style="padding-top:10px;padding-bottom:10px;margin-left:0;margin-right:0;text-align:center"> <a> <img src="https://www.serenespacespo.com/uploads/6/0/4/1/60416689/published/52314ae6567d80d523c4e6aa0a1c2294l-m1257386758rd-w960-h720.webp?1758815241" alt="Picture" style="width:552;max-width:100%" /> </a> <div style="display:block;font-size:90%"></div> </div></div> <div class="wsite-spacer" style="height:32px;"></div> <div class="paragraph"><span style="color:rgb(98, 98, 98)">Preparing your home for guests, especially when you embrace your unique style that might include "clutter," is about finding balance.
