Tips for Welcoming Holiday Guests...Even if you have Clutter

We all have it – those stacks of beloved books, the overflowing craft supplies that spark joy, or the collection of souvenirs that tell a story. As a professional organizer, I understand that "clutter" isn't always a dirty word. Often, it's a reflection of a life well-lived, a testament to passions, and a comfortable part of your home's unique personality. So, when guests are on their way, the thought of tidying can feel overwhelming, especially when your home's "clutter" feels less like a problem and more like a cherished part of your space.

But here’s the wonderful news: you can absolutely prepare your home for guests in a way that feels authentic to you, minimizes stress, and still makes everyone feel incredibly welcome. It's not about achieving a sterile, showroom-perfect look (unless that's genuinely what you desire!). Instead, it's about creating a comfortable, functional, and inviting environment that celebrates your home's unique charm.

Let's shift our perspective from "eradicating clutter" to "curating comfort." Because welcoming guests over the holidays is about spending time with loved ones and creating precious memories!

​Here are some practical tips to help you prepare your home for guests, honoring your space and your style:

1. Identify "Guest Zones" and Prioritize
You don't need to tackle every corner of your home. Focus your energy on the areas your guests will primarily use:
  • The Guest Bedroom/Sleeping Area: This is paramount. A fresh, clean space with clear surfaces is key.
  • The Bathroom: Absolutely essential for hygiene and comfort. Make sure that they will have extra toilet paper or any essentials they may need. 
  • Living/Common Areas: Where you'll gather and socialize.
  • The Kitchen (Optional, but helpful): If you plan on preparing meals together or guests will be accessing snacks/drinks.
Concentrate your efforts where it truly matters for their comfort and your peace of mind.

2. The "Temporary Home" for Your Treasures
For those items that truly define your home but might make a guest feel like they're navigating an obstacle course, consider a temporary relocation. This isn't about getting rid of them; it's about creating clear pathways and surfaces.
  • Bins, Baskets, and Boxes are Your Best Friends: Grab some attractive (or at least sturdy!) containers. You can quickly gather up those overflowing magazines, craft projects, or collections and tuck them away in a closet, in the garage, under a bed, or in a less-used room. The key here is that you don’t just throw everything in boxes but that you are intentional with keeping “like” items together.  Label the boxes/containers based on what category is inside and make sure you don’t have a bunch of boxes and bins that are a hodge podge of everything, otherwise this can become a large unruly obstacle to staying clutter free later down the road. 
  • The "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" Principle: If you have an unused corner, a rarely opened cabinet, or even your car trunk for a day or two, these can serve as excellent temporary storage spots.
  • Remember, It's Temporary: Once your guests depart, you can bring your beloved items back out. This strategy provides immediate relief without requiring permanent decisions.

3. Clear Surfaces for Guest Comfort
Even with clutter, clear surfaces in key guest areas make a huge difference. Imagine your guest trying to set down their phone, a book, or a cup of coffee.
  • Nightstands: Essential in the guest sleeping area. A clear surface, a reading lamp, and maybe a small bottle of water are perfect. Consider where they will plug in their phones or laptops and arrange for them to have outlets or a power strip accessible.
  • Bathroom Counter: Ensure there's space for their toiletries. You might even consider having a small tray available for them to use.
  • Coffee Tables and End Tables: In living areas, clear enough space for drinks, snacks, and personal items.
This doesn't mean emptying every surface, but rather creating thoughtful pockets of clear space for their practical needs.

4. Freshness and Functionality: The Non-Negotiables
These elements transcend any personal decorating style or level of "clutter." They are about basic hospitality and comfort:
  • Clean Linens and Towels: Nothing says "welcome" like fresh sheets and fluffy towels. Have an extra set readily available.
  • A Sparkling Bathroom: Focus on the toilet, sink, and shower/tub. Stock it with toilet paper, soap, and things that you like to have when staying away from home.
  • Clear Pathways: Ensure there are no tripping hazards, especially in areas guests will walk through frequently. This is about safety and ease of movement.
  • Empty Wastebaskets: In the guest bedroom and bathroom, an empty wastebasket is a small but appreciated detail.

5. Embrace the Authenticity of Your Home
Ultimately, your home tells your story. Your guests are coming to see you and experience your space. While thoughtful preparation is wonderful, don't feel pressured to erase your personality.
  • Share Your Story: If you have a collection you adore, don't hide it completely! Be ready to share the stories behind your treasures. This can be a wonderful conversation starter.
  • Acknowledge with Humor and Warmth: If a certain area is perpetually "in progress," a lighthearted comment like, "Welcome to our creative chaos!" can disarm any potential awkwardness and make everyone feel more at ease.
  • Focus on the Vibe: A welcoming atmosphere comes from warmth, generosity, and genuine hospitality, not from the absence of every single object. Your smile, your conversation, and your genuine care will always be the most important elements.​

By focusing on guest comfort, prioritizing key areas, and temporarily managing your beloved items, you can create a truly warm and inviting experience for everyone. Welcome them with open arms and the beautiful, authentic space you call home!
